Chimney Tops is a fairly short trail, but there are A LOT of steps. Consequently, there are portions that are genuine lung burners while the steps appear to carry on forever. Fortunately, those who persevere are rewarded with a great view of the Chimney Tops and a nice spot for lunch.

Chimney Tops Trail Quick Facts

Trailhead – From the Sugarlands Visitor Center take 441 towards Newfound Gap approximately 7 miles to the parking lot for the trailhead

Trail Stats
Length – 3.85 miles total
Difficulty – Pretty Strenuous
Elevation Gain – 1,201 feet
Route Type – Out and Back

The trail follows along a fairly robust streambed for the first half of the trail creating some small waterfalls along the way.

There is a small platform at the peak of the trail perfect for sitting down for a bit before heading back down. Although trail maps indicate the trail carries on, it is gated closed due to dangerous conditions.
