The Compass Harbor trail is actually a stroll of just about a mile around the property of George Dorr, also known as the father of Acadia National Park. He is responsible for the purchase or establishment of land grants for the majority of Acadia. He also donated this ‘farm’ to the park. He lived here until his death, at 90, in 1944. Similar to Bar Island, this is a good spot to get away from town for a moment, stretch your legs, and just enjoy the day.
The small parking lot is not well marked, so you have to keep an eye out for it on the left-hand side of the road. The property is located less than a mile south of downtown Bar Harbor, heading towards the Sieur de Monts entrance to the Park Loop Road.
You will walk through the forest to the remains of Dorr’s old estate ending at Dorr Point. You will be rewarded with a great view of Compass Harbor and the Porcupine Islands from here. Following the loop around, you will come to the ruins of the Old Farm with only the remains of the foundation visible. Unfortunately, the Park Service determined the cost of maintaining the property was too much to bear and the property was raised in the 1950’s. Although very little remains of any structure on the property, the foundation of the mansion is still intact, and it is easy to imagine a life of luxury nestled into the Maine coast. From there it is a quick stroll back to the parking lot.
