The Beech Cliffs trail was picked, apparently, specifically because there were some ladder climbs along the route. It is on the western side of Echo Lake, and once again, on the quieter side the national park. To be honest, if you have a fear of heights but want to tackle either of the iconic trails of Acadia – Beehive or Precipice – this is a great starter trail. It was steep at points, did contain a few ladder climbs, and traversed some fairly narrow cliffside outcroppings. It is also very short, so if you lose your nerve, the return isn’t very far away!
Beech Cliff Trail Quick Facts
Trailhead – Coming from Southwest Harbor on North Main St., turn left onto Echo Lake Beach Road and follow it to the parking lot. The trailhead is at the very northern end of the parking lot.
Trail Stats
Length – 4.4 miles
Difficulty – Moderate
Elevation Gain – 971 Feet
Route Type – Loop
The bulk of the work happens very early in the hike with a series of ladder climbs working towards the peak.
Once you clear the ladders, there is a fairly short section along some fairly narrow rock face before you reach the top of the cliffs.
Once you reach the top of the cliffs, it is a pretty level hike to reach an observation tower. Continue past the tower to begin your trip home. There are a few sections with stone stairs cut into the trail, but it is a generally gradual descent back to the start.
